The 956/962 is arguably the most successful race car in history.  Originally introduced in 1982 the 956 was an instant success winning the 1982 World Sportscar Championship and finishing 1,2,3 at Le Mans.  The car continued to have success in the following years winning or placing on podium in all races as well as taking the first 8 places in the 1983 Le Mans and the first 7 places in the 1984 Le Mans!  In 1984, a modification was required to meet IMSA rules in North America keeping the driver’s feet behind the center-line of the front axle.  To meet this requirement the 956 was stretched, and the 962 was born. Once on the scene, the longer wheel-based 962 continued collecting checkered flags across the globe. Due to it’s dominance, the turbocharged monster was required to install restrictor plates to allow the other manufacturers any chance of catching it. With success continuing over a remarkably long 12 year period, the 956/962’s racing history is unmatched. Interestingly, it’s final Le Mans victory in 1994 was achieved using a street-legal variant. Due to rule changes, the 962 race car was no longer allowed to compete at Le Mans, however a loop-hole in the ACO rules did allow entry of “street-legal grand touring” cars. Two street-legal Dauer 962s were entered in the GT1 class, after 24 hours the cars finished 1st and 3rd collecting another checkered flag at Le Mans.
