Ok, ok, we know it has 12 cylinders… just think of it as double the fun! The 917 was introduced in 1969 and had a close call before getting to the green flag. As legend has it, when FIA inspectors arrived to examine the 25 homologation cars, some were not yet completed or even drivable. The long row of shiny new 917s must have been such a beautiful sight ..possibly so amazing, it put the inspectors in a daze.  It is said the inspectors stopped looking after the first few cars, and even declined an offer to test drive any car of their choosing!
After a rocky start requiring further testing and tuning, the car dominated the World Sportscar Championship winning most endurance events outright including twice at Le Mans. Rule changes removed it from competition for the 1972 season, but did not end the story.  The 917 would still be legal in the completely unlimited Can-Am Series. The Can-Am version received a turbocharger boosting horsepower to an astonishing 1,100 making it a rocket which achieved 0-200 kmh (0-124 mph) in 5.3 seconds!  The cars were dominant across North America until another rule change took them out of racing in 1974.
