In 1965 the first purpose-built race car to use the Flat Six engine was introduced. Swapping the 904’s original four cylinder for the Flat Six provided an excellent test bed for the newly designed engine. More than just a beautiful aerodynamic shape, the 904/6 proved very successful in GT class racing. Weighing in at just 655 kg (1,443 lb) the mid-engined racer out-gunned more powerful GT cars with it’s superb power-to-weight ratio and cornering ability. Although only 6 were built by the factory for the “Werks” team, many other 904s later received 6 cylinder conversions when the engine became available.

As a side note, some 904s were also built and raced with a Flat Eight engine. The 904/8 is the rarest 904 variant as only 3 were built by the factory.  These are easily distinguished by the large round air intake just behind the rear window for the 17 blade flat fan.
